Vaux

We Do School Differently

Vaux Big Picture High School is a four-year, neighborhood school in Sharswood dedicated to providing a holistic educational experience for up to 500 students annually.

When it opened in 2017, it was the first of its kind: a neighborhood, public school in Philly operated by an outside education provider. This unique partnership between the School District of Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers (Vaux Advisors are unionized), the Philadelphia Housing Authority (PHA owns the Vaux building), and BPP is a small school with a big impact.

Since 2021, 292 young Philadelphians have graduated from Vaux with real-world career experience and individualized post-secondary plans. That means each year, 90%+ of 12th graders have earned their diplomas.

What makes Vaux unique?

  • Get real world, career experience while still in high school

  • 2 days/week are dedicated to identity and interest exploration

  • Project-based learning

  • Small class sizes of no more than 18 students

  • Full-time, in-house Resilience Specialist providing free emotional, behavioral, and mental health counseling

  • After school clubs including sports (football, basketball, girls flag football, track, and more!)

  • School-Based Health Center

  • MakerSpace with access to materials for drawing, photography, woodworking, sewing, and more

Attending a school like Vaux is very unique and rare. Not too many schools let you leave out the building twice a week and go gain experience from a real internship.

[Vaux] really helps set up our future.
