Become a mentor

Phase 1 RWL students explore their passions in- and outside the classroom, learn basic professional skills, and complete a service-learning project in their community.

You Would:

• Welcome small groups of students and their Advisor to your workplace site for a day of shadowing

• Host a 60-minute in-person or virtual workshop for students to introduce them to basic skills used in your industry, and/or

• Conduct mock interviews with several students during a three-hour time slot to prepare them for the next phase

Phase 2 students identify an interest area to focus on for the year and participate in group Learning Through Internship Cohorts (LTIC) where they engage in hands-on, industry-specific learning collaboratively.

You Would:

• Serve as a Mentor for 1-3 hrs/week for 12 or more weeks for a group of 10 students interested in your field; 

• Teach them basic industry info, create hands-on learning activities for them, and support them in designing a project that deepens their understanding of what they learned

Phase 3 students identify a specific career to deepen their skills in and are paired with a real professional in that career to learn from. We call this Learning Through Internships (LTI).

You Would:

• Serve as a Mentor for 1-3 hrs/week for 12 or more weeks for an individual student interested in your profession;

• Provide industry-specific training and coaching to your student

Phase 4 students decide on a post-secondary pathway and create an action plan for it while continuing to build their industry-specific skills in an LTI and completing a professional portfolio.

You Would:

• Serve as a Mentor for 1-3 hrs/week for 12 or more weeks for an individual student interested in your profession;

• Provide industry-specific training and coaching to your student

• Provide them with guidance on how to pursue employment in your field after graduating from high school
